7 absences

20% of 36 meetings is 7.2 meetings.

Where the 20% rule comes from

Most Philippine college handbooks put the cap at about 20% of a subject's class meetings or hours. These are the published rules behind the default 20%:

  • Ateneo: absences in a class must not exceed 20% of the term's total meetings. Going over in a letter-graded course means an automatic W (Withdrawal without Permission) that counts in your QPI.
  • UST: allowable absences are limited to 20% of the required class hours. In excess of that, the grade is FA and final examinations are barred.
  • PUP: a student absent for at least 20% of a subject's total class hours is automatically dropped from the class roll.
  • FEU: follows CHED's Manual of Regulations for Private Higher Education, Section 101: absences of more than 20% of the prescribed class or laboratory periods mean failure or no credit.

The wording differs where it hurts. PUP acts as soon as you reach 20%, while Ateneo, UST, and the CHED manual act only when you go past it, and Ateneo counts meetings while UST and PUP count class hours. The calculator stays strictly below whatever limit you enter, so its count is safe under any of these wordings. Your own handbook is the one that counts.

Questions about the 20% rule

May ilan.
