Latin Honors Requirements

Summa, magna, and cum laude cutoffs for six Philippine universities, read from each school's own published rules, plus the conditions that can disqualify an otherwise high average.

Cutoffs at a glance

On the 1.00 to 5.00 scale, lower is better; on a 4.0 scale, higher is better. Each row below comes from that school's own handbook or registrar page.

What each school requires

A cutoff alone is never the whole rule. Every school below adds conditions, and most disqualify any failing grade. These are the published rules each row in the table is based on.

UP Diliman

University of the Philippines Diliman

  • Every curriculum subject and qualifying elective is considered; only resident credits count in the average.
  • At least 75% of academic units completed at UP, with two years in residence immediately before graduation.
  • At least 15 units or the normal load each term, unless a lighter load is justified.
  • Being found guilty of cheating or dishonesty, or being suspended for one year or more for specified conduct, bars honors.

  • Residence of at least six consecutive terms before graduation.
  • At least 76% of academic units completed at UST.
  • At least 75% of the regular load per term, unless a justified lighter load is approved by the Dean.
  • Major or grave offenses, or a final conviction for a crime involving moral turpitude, disqualify.

De La Salle University (Manila)

  • Based on the cumulative GPA of academic courses. Honorable Mention is 3.200.
  • Any failing grade, academic or non-academic, disqualifies.

There is no national cutoff

CHED does not publish a national Latin honors scale. Each school sets its own cutoffs and conditions, which is why PUP's summa bar (1.1500) is stricter than UP's (1.20) on the same 1.00 to 5.00 scale, and why FEU, Ateneo, and DLSU use a 4.0 scale at all. Always confirm with your own registrar.
